Guide to Getting Appetizers At a Wedding Reception

I attended a nice wedding this weekend. The reception was held at a very nice country club in Palo Alto. The highlight of any reception is the food. The hot appetizers were great. Even though dinner was coming soon you are always very hungry during the reception. The problem is everyone else is hungry too creating a feeding frenzy when the appetizers come out.
Since the reception was at at an upscale country club a certain level decorum is required. You can’t knock over women and children to snag the appetizers while they are hot like you do at Costco. Still one appetizer is not going to satisfy me till dinner. You need a plan to get more. Here are some tips:
- Position yourself where the food is coming out so the waiter sees you first when he comes out with a fresh plate.
- Make friends with the wait staff. Address the waiters by their first name, ask how their day is going and make small talk. Hopefully they will gravitate towards you more often if you take an interest in them.
- Tip the waiters. Even in a open bar, it is customary to tip the bartender a few bucks when you order drinks. Few people ever tip the wait staff, but if you do you will get more appetizers than anyone else. If you drop a few bucks on the waiters you won’t have to stand by the kitchen to get more appetizers. They will find you.
