How Much is 10,000 Steps?

Its only 1 more week before the start of the October Walking Challenge. Time to get your pedometer, and start training. Updated information can be found here, so sign up now. Many people have asked me how much is 10,000 steps a day, which is our ultimate goal. From my walking experience the past few weeks, you can walk about 5-6 thousand steps a day if you are moderately active. That means walking to the BART station, and a few blocks to work plus the normal walking you do in the office and around the house. To get to the 8-10 thousand step level we are shooting for, you will have to make time for walking.
I normally walk around 45 minutes to an hour a day, and that usually gets about 7-8 thousand steps. Additionally, if you normally go to the gym to ride the bike or the StairMaster, half an hour is equal to 3,000 steps. So, you can get your 8-10 thousand step goal, by a variety of ways so you don’t get bored. Changing your walking route frequently is also a good way to change your routine. So, 10,000 steps is within everyone’s reach, but it does require some effort. You won’t get it by lying on the couch watching TV. Good luck.
We did something similar at our company, but we divided up into teams to see who could take a virtual walk across the USA the fastest. Getting 10,000 steps a day is hard but there are people averaging 15-20k.
